Beckermet Parish council was established in May 2011. The new councillors were elected in the local council elections held at this time.

Prior to this, Beckermet to the south of the river was in Beckermet St. Bridget's parish, together with Calder Bridge and the northern half of the Sellafield Nuclear site. Beckermet to the north of the river was in Beckermet St. Johns Parish together with Thornhill and parts of Egremont.

It was felt by the residents that this was a slightly illogical arrangement, and it may be preferable to have Beckermet represented by a single parish. A consultation with the residents of St. Johns and St. Bridget's parishes confirmed this, thus a proposal to merge the two parishes was undertaken.

The result was the new parish of Beckermet. This comprises of Beckermet, Thornhill and the northern part of Sellafield site.

The parish council was renamed Beckermet with Thornhill Parish Council in June 2012.
